about
This is an old hobo tune, from back in the early 1900's when 'hobo' was a somewhat respectable term for the traveling gig worker. There are a lot of variations of this tune, some much darker than others. This is a version made famous by Harry McClintock, but historians agree that he almost certainly didn't write the original lyrics. It's thought that the song was pieced together and shared by folks who traveled from town to town and sang songs to keep the sadness down.

An intimate look at a brilliant album, it puts an even greater focus on the wonderful lyrics and basic melodies. Interestingly, I now have a new favorite song on the album. PDD
